About the Nursing Assistant Profession

Professional Overview & Clinical Importance

Nursing Assistants, also known as General Duty Assistants (GDA), are the primary caregivers providing essential bedside support to hospitalized, elderly, postoperative, and bedridden patients. They bridge the vital communication gap between patients, staff nurses, and doctors.

They are rigorously trained in measuring vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation), patient hygiene, bedsore prevention, catheter care, feeding assistance, and emergency mobility transfers in both hospital wards and home healthcare environments.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Essential compassionate care duties provided daily in healthcare facilities:

1

Vital Signs Recording

Accurately record patient blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and SpO2 at prescribed hourly intervals.

2

Patient Hygiene & Bed Care

Assist bedridden patients with sponge baths, oral hygiene, linen changes, and pressure ulcer (bedsore) prevention.

3

Nutrition & Medication Support

Assist with patient feeding, oral medication reminders, and monitoring fluid intake and output charts.

4

Patient Mobilization & Transfer

Safely transfer patients between hospital beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers using correct ergonomic lifting techniques.

5

Infection Control & Waste Segregation

Disinfect patient surroundings and segregate biomedical waste into color-coded bins according to hospital norms.

6

Emergency Alert & BLS Support

Promptly recognize clinical deterioration, alert nursing supervisors, and assist in basic first aid and CPR.
