About the Optometry Profession
Professional Overview & Clinical Importance
Optometrists and Ophthalmic Technicians are healthcare professionals dedicated to examining human eyes, diagnosing refractive vision defects (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), and prescribing corrective eyeglasses and contact lenses.
They work in close synergy with ophthalmologist eye surgeons, performing automated keratometry, non-contact tonometry (glaucoma screening), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, visual field testing, and pre-operative evaluation for cataract and LASIK laser surgeries.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Essential visual diagnostic procedures carried out in eye clinics:
Comprehensive Vision Testing & Refraction
Perform objective retinoscopy and subjective manifest refraction with trial lens sets and phoropters.
Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy
Examine anterior segment structures of the eye including cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and crystalline lens.
Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Measurement
Utilize non-contact or applanation tonometry to screen for early signs of glaucoma (kala motia).
Contact Lens Fitting & Care Guidance
Determine corneal curvature and fit soft, toric, or rigid gas-permeable contact lenses with hygiene instructions.
Pre-Surgical Ophthalmic Biometry
Conduct A-scan ultrasound and optical biometry to compute intraocular lens (IOL) power before cataract surgery.
Visual Field & OCT Analysis
Operate automated Humphrey visual field perimetry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) machines.
